Why “Brave” isn’t so brave

So, I saw “Brave” and it was very pretty, but… (spoilers ahoy)

Young princess nearly kills her mother with witchcraft in mythical Scotland and no one gets very upset about it. I mean, even Lord and Lady MacBeth paid some dues for trucking with witches.

I was hoping there would be more substance to the story. I’ll give Shakespeare a pass, but the whole witchcraft angle seemed like a cop-out and an embarrassing lack of imagination from some very imaginative people at Pixar.

I was hoping Merida would run away from her marriage and do something truly heroic. Like put together a team of wayward heroines like herself and defend a small village from Vikings or something. If you really don’t have a good idea for a story, you can never go too far wrong with “Seven Samauri.”
