Coolness. Was it an easy transition to make? I’m considering a similar sort of move for my own site.
Comment by Seth A — March 19, 2007 @ 1:40 pm
It was an okay transition. DreamHost’s one click install made that part easy and I figured out customizing the stylesheets with trial and error, but that was okay, too. I only had to ask one of my geeky friends for help on enlarging the font size. The original theme was headache-inducingly small.
I miss Greymatter because I’m used to it, but I’m happy with WP so far.

of course you can have a link on skippy, ginger! in fact i could have sworn i gave you one, but i’m either experiencing blackouts again, or dropped you off by mistake one spring cleaning.
anyways, it may be a few days before i get around to adding new links, but i promise i will add hackenblog!

don’t know about stephanie brown, but i did change the spelling of your name, ginger, on my blog.
at least you are up front enough to call them comics and not “graphic novels.”
i’m a big birds of prey fan, tho. wished the series stayed on the air.
Comment by skippy — April 1, 2007 @ 8:23 pm
Oh, merci, M. Skippy, on the name spelling thing. It’s a hellish name; I automatically spell it whenever I give it out the first time. Nobody can pronounce it either; it’s ‘may’ like ‘hay’ or ‘day’ or ’say, sailor’ -erson, that’s me.
Nah, “Fun Home” is a graphic novel; Batman is a comic book.
Wasn’t there a killer movie of the week with David Jansen called “Birds of Prey”? Helicopters flying through buildings and over cliffs. Makes me sorry I missed “Airwolf,” too.
Actually, the Stephanie Brown thing is bothering me for the reasons in the post and superhero comic books really are rough on us womenfolk. But the Tech Central demographic they’re aimed at pretty much demands a misogynistic product and, as we know, money talks and bullshit walks.
The solution? Well, waiting for Marvel and DC to implode under the weight of their own foolishness is probably out. Perhaps the way forward is to keep calling them on their creepy junk and get more women writing comics. Bad of me, but off the top of my head I can only think of two female writers at the big two, and this, I believe, is a significant part of the problem. Yes, I know there are misogynistic women out there, one of them has been making a fool of herself to paying audiences lately (HT Ginmar), but, hell, it’d be a start to get more women writing superhero comics. A tough start, but I didn’t plow this field.

My partner teaches ethics to freshmen at a university. She has had three (out of 80) kids come to her about feeling suicidal this semester — they come away to school, they are on their own, sometimes for the first time, they are under pressure to achieve. They lose it. So far the school counseling center has been some help.

Has he ever HEARD of comic books? Jim Lee? Jae Lee, even? These guys are getting big bucks and are extremely popular and sought-after.
Comment by Elayne Riggs — April 23, 2007 @ 5:43 pm
Well, okay, that’s three right there out of four billion.
I dunno, Elayne, incredible as it is to us, I have heard that there are some people who have never heard of comic books. I’ve never met any of them, but I don’t get out much.
But… wait! Hubba hubba! Look at the impossible abs and the curve in the guy on the right’s spine! What does that remind you of? Maybe Weng Ziyang reads comic books.
I know you’re busy, but if you have a few minutes, go look at the startdrawing.org site. Comic books or no, It. Is. Awesome.

Comment by Lynn — May 8, 2007 @ 4:25 pm
My complaint with the petition link: It doesn’t work, especially an online one, see Snopes for why. ‘Who’ is collecting these sigs? What will be done with them? Who are those sigs being sent to? How will the receiving person deal with online sigs?
Marches and rallies are more useful, although still tangentially since we are in different places. A march by cause A in country X shows the officials of country X that supporters of cause A exist, in a democracy, officials X will be worried about being voted out of office, in a dictatorship, officials X will be worried about an uprising (in some ways, a march that has successfully took place in a dictatorship is more effective than one that had in a democracy).
Who will paid attention in Iraq? Well, the Americans are still there right now, and since I doubt that Bush will listen, I think, the Democrats must be appeal to, this must be made an issue for them to address before they pull out or even after they pull out. (Just because you’ve withdrawn troops doesn’t mean that you wash your hands clean of the mess you’ve made, money please! For their infrastructure, it’s hard for order to be kept when there is none. Money for a previously neutral party to step in. Money for Red Cross. Money for women organizations there.)
If you are really, really, daring, and have the means, like, more money than the average people, you could go directly to Iraq, and offer your resources to the women who have organized there. Be ready to die, be prepared for torture, bring your guns. This is a really extreme thing, but shall someone do it, it would help a lot.

I have lots of LJs that I read on Bloglines. Click on “Add” in the left window near the top, then click on “Communities” in the right window. The LiveJournal choice is the fifth one down; just enter the person’s LJ user name and that should do it.
Comment by Elayne Riggs — May 18, 2007 @ 10:13 am
Thanks for the low-down, Elayne.
Oh, maaaaan, why did they change this? It worked fine before. The deal is that I “was” subscribed to all these LJs and I can see them on my show all list, but, as I recently discovered to my horror, many of them were active, but the posts never hit my bloglines. I’ve no idea how much time went by before I realized Ginmar was being way too quiet (and then realized, she wasn’t). Anyway, I just resubbed to the ones I can’t live w/out, I’ll get the rest in my copious spare time.
What I like about bloglines is that I can sub to a blog and then pretty much forget about it until there’s a post. I have a yen for a very obscure type of FMA slash, so I’m subbed to some very obscure and quiet LJs in hopes that someday I’ll get some decent Roy/Russell action. Ah well.
Comment by Ginger — May 18, 2007 @ 11:08 am
Thank you for saying this! That’s pretty much exactly my reaction to reading her speech. The woman may lead by example but her rhetoric is anything but inspiring.
Comment by Elayne Riggs — May 28, 2007 @ 9:13 pm
I’m going to disagree — partially. Barbara’s generation and mine (I not quite that old, but close) has really been acting as a sort of plug in the works of progress. I’m an organizational consultant to progressive non-profits and over and over I’ve tried to referee situations in which a new generation of leadership was driven out by founders who couldn’t envision the necessity to leave the field to new, energetic, imaginative young people.
Thing is, it’s not about apologizing; it’s got to be about facilitating new leadership and offering inspiration. That’s the part about which I agree with you. And I read her blog too.

>>I don’t want the comics industry to implode or explode or create a comics ghetto just for girls, I just want to see less misogyny and gynophobia in it.
Comment by Tamora Pierce — June 13, 2007 @ 3:58 pm
I don’t think the rest of my comment made it–
that doesn’t seem like such an irrational idea. We can live with a certain amount of T&A. After all, the guys are majorly buff and cut. But the slicing, dicing, victimization, rape, and depowerment–enough, already. Who wants to introduce her friends and fans to this stuff? Who wants to admit to anyone she indulges in the genre that gave us Women In Refrigerators?
Comment by Tamora Pierce — June 14, 2007 @ 9:14 am
I’ve been thinking about this a little more, and one way for the comics industry to be more women friendly, or at least less anti-woman, would be to have more women who “get it” writing and drawing and editing. I’ve heard Joe Q (I think) say they can’t find any women to work for them. Well, here’s a suggestion, pal: ask the women you already have working for you for recommendations. That’s how the old boy network got formed – men recommending men. Try women recommending women, give them the same chance you give men (which is just a fair shake and the chance to succeed [or fail] on their own merits), and let your readers decide.
Will this happen? Who knows? The whold world might have to change first.
Oh, and death to the Direct Market. It ain’t helping matters. When I was a girl, they sold comics in supermarkets, drug stores, and liquor stores. If the industry wants more readers, some of whom might have two X chromosomes, it needs to get where the new readers are instead of making buying comics an unspeakable geekquest.
Hey, if I was in charge… it would be different.

Libby got as fair a trial as you can get in this country, he was sentenced and like any other citizen in this situation should be in jail now. Sandy Berger was never charged, much less tried. Libby is free because our so-called president and vp are morally hollow monsters as never seen before in the history of this country. That you cannot see that and yet choose to haunt my blog is nauseating, and I’m a through being cool.

Way down the left slope of the curve.
Comment by Walter E. Wallis — July 14, 2007 @ 6:43 am
You seem to have missed the meat of both comments.
Willow’s pretty clearly upset because the problem was so much worse with African-American characters, and there are still unbelievable problems with African-American characters in all forms of media, and your comparison is sweeping that under the rug in favor of supporting your own personal agenda, which is examining gender discrimination. You are putting down her concerns to prop up yours. That is a problem.
Meanwhile, Betty was basically telling you to avoid this comparison, its useless and all it does is set people against each other. With this clarification attempt, you persist with the comparison. Why?
Comment by Ragnell — July 31, 2007 @ 2:40 am
Maybe I’m just being dopey, but I don’t see the problem. I have many times seen feminist comic readers say that just as the racist caricatures of comics have become a thing of the past so should the caricatures of women that overemphasize female features. In this post, you seem to be suggesting that the depictions of women should follow a similar path and that the features of Blacks have become realistic than those of women. There is certainly a lot of evidence of that, like the pictures you posted.
If you’d like a piece of advice, the problem isn’t that you are wrong; so much as you are threatening someone’s victim status. Some people hate that. I’ll tell you what, as a gay man, I’ll let you say that depictions of gay characters have come further along than those of women, and I won’t get cranky about it.

You must live in that magical world where Blacks are treated with the utmost respect at the expenxe of all other groups. In this day and age, where Black characters are so few and far between, and well-written blacks even fewer, to speew the garbage you are is pretty back asswards. But then again white privilege can do that to a person.
Comment by Lloyd Webber — August 2, 2007 @ 1:22 pm
All ever so true — except reality cuts through cage bars. Our rulers “made their own reality” until reality whacked them upside the head. Listen to those who are being caged — they’ll provide the cage cutting frames. Then spread ‘em.
Just a thought. Has worked remarkably for gay folks. Our opponents find themselves rapidly conceding most everything EXCEPT marriage. What if marriage was the last thing we wanted?
Cheers.

Hi Ginger, I work with Six Apart and I had a chance to read your post… I think almost all of the posts you’ve listed here have been responded to at various points, most days ago. If you’d like, I’m happy to point you to links to where those conversations have taken place.
More to the point, though, I’d love to get the chance to talk — it’s not just incorrect to say we’re unethical, it’s irresponsible when you haven’t gotten all the facts. I bet if I can share more information about what’s happened with some of these conversations, you might revise your opinion.
Finally, for someone who’s a feminist to refer to a female entrepreneur (who’s also one of my closest friends) as a “knocked up”, “wicked”, “stupid” person seems contradictory. In fact, it seems like the kind of fact-free bullying personal attack that so many women, especially in the technology industry, face. I hope we can start a conversation that might help you rethink those kinds of tactics.
And no, money isn’t the only thing that gets our attention — our community certainly does. Unfortunately, so do baseless, needlessly personal, meanspirited attacks on individuals. That’s a problem I think we can both help solve.
Comment by Anil — August 16, 2007 @ 2:13 pm
Anil,
You’re welcome to post links and explanations here. Be my guest.
Do you have links that explain why 6A condones pro-ana and pro-Nazi sites? I’d be very interested in those. If I were a parent, I’d be more worried about those than slash fan fic and artwork.
And speaking of parents…. Is Mena really so thin skinned she needs her employees to defend her? Hm. I just thought she was as foul mouthed as I am, but had more opportunities to lecture European audiences on civility. Hey, at least I didn’t call her an asshole. I think she apologized for calling the guy an asshole, but the part that makes me laugh is that she was in Paris talking about civility before she called him an asshole. Chacun à son goût, mais pour moi, je peut seulement rire.
So, anyway, since Mena is enciente, if you like that word better, I suppose any appeals to her for (more) civility and fairness in the execution of the LJ deletion policy wouldn’t get very far. As I understand it, and this might have changed, LJs were being deleted without any warning or possible appeal.
You can critique (if that’s what you’re doing) my feminism as much as you like, Anil, it goes with the territory.

This is so intellectually dishonest, it makes it seem as if you’re not actually interested in having a conversation, along the lines of asking “when did you stop beating your wife?” No, we don’t condone those things, as you’ve quoted in your own post, the text you’ve linked to says “LiveJournal does not support girls harming themselves.”
Frankly, I’m astounded that you’re willing to assert things that you’ve refuted on your own blog post.
And long before I worked with Mena, I was her friend. I’m sorry that you don’t understand the desire I have to not see my friends insulted publicly by people who’ve never met them. Most people I talk to seem to understand why that would be a bad thing. I certainly don’t think Mena’s ever said people shouldn’t speak passionately about their ideas, but if your theoretical desire is fairness, you might do well to read things like this LiveJournal policy post or this apology and clarification.
In short: There was an explanation of policy days ago, which made it clear that journals will not be deleted without warning, and will only be reviewed if they’ve been reported. We never go out looking for material to respond to.
And not to belabor the point, but Mena’s speech in France was about accountability, much more than it was about civility. If you would like to try and be accountable for your words, my mobile phone number is ###### (removed by GM), and my IM is anildash. You’ve already got my email address. Please feel free to get in touch personally if you’d like to use the same tenor and stridency while responding irresponsibly on the basis of factually incorrect assumptions that have been clearly disproven.
Or, I’d settle for you just being a little more considered the next time you want to call out one of my friends or question the ethics of the good people that I work with.

I read his article and started skimming over the rest of it when he went on about how it fails when fangirls attack. A humanist but not a feminist? Wow, I really don’t get that, although it does make sense why he has no comment section. He probably would receive a number of arguments to counter his.
Also, his style of arguing is very reminiscent of other people that When Fangirls Attack have linked to, whose style it is to talk down to people and to just keep talking, as though th deluge of words and logic is enough to drown counter-arguments in it.
He must also be acting from, at least, male privilege, although it surprised me to learn that he was black. I, a white male, could point out several examples over history where change was made because people who were oppressed and/or kicked around got very angry and stood up for themselves.
For example:
American Revolution? Got mad, stood up, kicked off British Rule.
Civil War? People got mad, kicked off slavery, united the whole country.
World War 2? People stoof up, and took down Hitler and his insane fascism.
Rosa Parks? She would not sit in the back of the bus, and it turned out to be one of the kicking off points for the Civil Rights Movement.
Apartheid in South Africa? The majourity of the population, all black people, got a hellavu pissed off and stood up, backed by the rest of the world, except for countries such as Britain, and got rid of it.
So yeah, sitting down, not doing anything? Does nothing.
I would write more, but I have an electrical program to go to, where one of the students is a woman, who probably would not be there if women before her hadn’t gotten pissed off and stood up, told people off, and made the government recognized them as people in the eyes of the law.

I grew up on that album, too. Turns out Stan Freberg put out a sequel a few years back (35 years after the original) — The United States of America, Part II, The Middle Years (post-revolution to WWI) with some of the original actors and David Ogden Stiers, Tyne Daily, Harry Shearer, and John Goodman. Some of it is as good as the original, some not so much, but given how magnificent that first album was, it was impossible to top. I picked them up together as a 2 CD set and now that is all the short people want to listen to every morning on the ride to school. It’s amazing to hear the two of them singing every word to “It’s a Round, Round World” and “Put On Your Top Hat, White Feather, and Tails” like my brother and I did thirty years ago. Some bits are just quality comedy.

Mark Vallen is simply trying to jumpstart his go-nowhere career by bashing someone who actually HAS one. It’s a time-honored tradition among the second-rate and failing. The fact that he passed out literature– including HIS OWN ART– amongst those standing in line at Fairey’s show ought to tell you he’s simply an opportunist out to raise his own profile. If he were truly interested in constructive dialogue he would have picked up the phone and made the local call to Fairey to ask him about it. Then, if he wasn’t satisfied with the answers– or at least wanted to include them– he could have offered up the other side of the coin. Instead, he posted a shrill call of “Look at Me!” in hopes of selling a few more canvases of his Jr. High caliber artwork. Pretty sad, really.

One of these days we’ll just get our credit cards implanted as under-skin chips and wave our hands over readers to purchase things. The same chips will reveal our whereabouts at all times. We’ll adopt them enthusiastically for their convenience….
Don’t know what I think of that.

This is a wonderful idea.
My only disagreement is that feral cats can be tamed to be house pets. I have one, and several of my friends have feral cats.
Actually all of these cats were from behind a restaurant. My son’s and several of the cooks took months taming several of the kittens that were born in the springtime. Ours has been one of the most wonderful cats I’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing my home (after my last cat of 19.5 years — none will ever be like Cassie).
Thing is, taming a feral cat takes a lot of time and a huge amount of patience. Months just to be able to pick up the young cat, and several more months adjusting to human contact.
Comment by archcrone — December 31, 2007 @ 6:21 pm
Hi A! There was this in the article:
“Garrison worked with two shelters to select the most feral cats possible. (If a cat suddenly gets friendly, the animal is pulled from the pool and, with any luck, is adopted.)”
So if they think they can rehabilitate one of these feral kitties into a housecat, they give it their best shot. But even the ones that stay on the rat patrol get some perks in addition to being allowed to live:
“The cats were then spayed or neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and ear-tipped (under anesthesia while the cats are being altered, vets notch an ear tip, the widely recognized sign that a cat is altered).”
This is such a great idea, I can hardly believe it’s happening in LA. One small problem with the program is that there are no funds to feed the kitties once the relocation and acclimation (acclimatization?) process is over. The cops are shelling out of their own pockets, which ain’t right and can’t go on forever. So I hope the LAPD, the City, Working Cats, whoever can get that detail covered sooner than later.
There were some nice cop quotes in the article, showing that they’re not all nut cases in the LAPD, in case anyone was wondering. I, on the other hand, never realized LA had such a serious rodent problem, but it’s a city so, even though I’ve seen the occasional rodent here in LA, I don’t know why I thought all the four-legged kind of rats lived east of the Rockies.

Comment by Fashion Models Agencies — January 1, 2008 @ 11:35 am
Ahh, Ginger, I didn’t remember reading that part. Perhaps I was blinded by the part of the kitters not making it out of shelters. I just hate the thought of these kitters being put to sleep.
HOnestly, though, I was surprised at how long it took for Kasumi (our feral cat) to get used to human company, and the other cooks that took in kitties had the same long road.
There is a group in the area that try to catch as many feral cats as possible and spay/neuter them, and then release them back into the same area where they were caught.

Luckily, in my current life, I don’t have to wear the suit/tie combo very often (mostly just weddings/funerals), but I used to. The worst part is the constriction of the necktie, you can hardly swallow. Also, hard to have much individual style in that sort of outfit, which is the point I guess, everyone looks sort of similar (just look at the photo above), like drones.

“Hasn’t Congress always been able to subpoena anyone they wanted to? Weird. What a stupid lawsuit.”
The answer is, Yes. Congress has always been able to subpoena anyone they wanted to. But the Bush Administration has challenged that right of “checks and balances” under its “unitary executive” principle. BushCo basically argues that its insider advisers (Rove, Bolten, Miers, etc. etc.) don’t have to testify before Congress. That these people (whether they still work for Bush or have retired), have special privilege to be above the law of the land. Specifically the Bush Admin says that these advisers have (or have had) access to classified information regarding the war on terror(ism); information which Congress and the public are not entitled to know. (Because, you know, if Bolten, Miers, and Rove had to answer to Congress the terrorists would win and America would burn.)
So, it was a huge setback for Bush’s unitary executive principle that the courts (the other check on executive power) agreed with Congress and ordered Bolten and Miers to testify. The next big challenge will be the fact that Bolten and Miers (on orders from Bush) may still refuse to appear on the floor of Congress. If that’s the case, Congress must petition the district court for permission to (physically) compel their appearance. Of course, the judge who would hear that case is a Bush appointee, so who knows wether that judge would agree with Congress and order guards to physically escort Miers/Bolten to the floor of Congress. (The last bit I’m less sure of, but I seem to remember reading about recently.)

I listened to it in audiobook and it was excellent in that medium. Review here. He situates Obama in the King lineage in a very helpful way.

James Macgregor Burns is one of the most important and under-studied political historians in the last sixty years. His insights on how to work the levers of the American political system and the critical importance of party renewal for the achievement of progressive political power have been all too often ignored by the left. He’s ninety years old, so someone will soon have to pick up his torch. If Kuttner (one of the best commentators on the economy who posts something once per week or more, along with Dean Baker and William Grider) can help carry that torch into the future, it would be a great service to us all.

Hey! The Mormons can’t all be to blame. We have feelings too! When Utah had their state constitutional amendment there were some Mormons that did vote against it (I was one of them). And for Utah to become a state polygamy had to be abolished and it is against the law (but, we don’t need to go into the whole Warren Jeffs deal).
I realize that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the official name for the Mormons) came out for Prop. 8 and encouraged the California members to vote for the amendment. But a few things need to be said. The Church doesn’t take political stands too often. When they do take a stand they leave the decision up to the members. You aren’t required to vote a certain way to stay a member. A large part of our beliefs are that everyone has the right to choose whatever path they want. Just be prepared for the consequences that follow.
Sorry for the long rant. Ginger, you know I love you! It just gets frustrating when Mormon misconceptions run rampant. The members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints have a wide variety of opinions and personal beliefs. Being a member of this church I know I take issues a little sensitively. But I’m also not your typical Mormon. We have a running joke in my family that we are all too liberal to be Mormons. These comments are coming from an active member who reads yaoi and voted for Ralph Nader in this last election. I also tend to vote for Democratic candidates. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it (unless your Mormon, you shouldn’t be smoking a pipe)!

Hi there. I came across your blog while Googling “USPS Missent”. I sent out an important package on Jan 7 via Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation to a neighboring state and discovered that it was “missent” on Jan 8. That was the last of the updates on USPS.com thus far (today is Jan 14). I am getting a little anxious, as Priority Mail usually takes 2-3 days (sometimes 4 at the latest) to get to its destination. May I ask if you used Priority Mail? Also, did the package return to you or did it eventually make it to the addressee on its own? Please shoot me a quick email if you have time at bulkhead72@hotmail.com. Thanks!

This is a list of those who are acting within the rights provided in America. Whether you agree with them or not, they have a right to do and support what they believe is right. Why criticize them for doing what so many others did on the other side (support their side with donations)? Would you be offended if someone printed a list of those who donated against prop 8, and treated it like it was shameful to be on the list (as is the purpose with this list, and the posts accompanying it?? The democracy we live in provides the right to vote our conscience, and to donate money and time and work for that cause. The majority of voters supported prop 8, and that should be respected. That’s how we do things in this great country of ours. It’s not un-American to vote for or against a proposition…it is completely American to do so. What’s un-American is to criticize and demean and put down those who voted differently than you, regardless of that vote. Majority rules in elections, and this one was settled. Stop criticizing those who voted and supported their conscience. Whether I voted for or against prop 8 matters not today, because what really matters is how I treat people who have a viewpoint different than mine.
Comment by Otis — February 4, 2009 @ 9:43 am
I strongly disagree. It is “un-American” to limit inalienable rights and freedoms of the people. That is why this law is unconstituional and why it will eventually be overturned. My hope is that one day America will actually become the home of the brave and the land of the free. However, we must educate by example, practice of free speach and the opressed must take their civil rights!

The truth is Marriage is impossible unless one is male and the other female. Why not accept legal domestic partnership? Why must you make a joke of marriage? It just isn’t possible between 2 same sex persons.
Comment by Jock — February 6, 2009 @ 11:40 am
The truth is Marriage is impossible unless one is male and the other female.
Except in Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Canada, and other such civilized places. And soon California will join the civilized world, too.
This one man+one woman concept of marriage is like saying democracy is only for English speaking countries or God only listens to Catholic prayers. It’s not very hip or tolerant and even in the 21st Century the world needs more of both. Gay marriage harms no one. Really it doesn’t. If you don’t like gay marriage, well, don’t get one. Get a…a Winnebago or something you and the family can vacation in. Yeah, I like that idea. And live and let consenting adults live. Anything else is a waste of time and energy.
Comment by Ginger Mayerson — February 6, 2009 @ 8:47 pm
Ginger, In all charity and love, I think your missing the point. You can call a relationship between same sex couples anything you want. But words have meaning. You can’t take a word and just conveniently twist it’s meaning to support your desires. The sexual organ of a man is incomplete on it’s own. The sexual organ of a woman is incomplete on it’s own. To make a true marriage, the male and female union naturally complete each other to potentially make something wonderful…New Life! That union of male and female IS the definition of marriage. Please take time to read: http://www.theologyofthebody.net/
It’s not about religion, its about truth, life and natural law. Many gay and lesbian brothers and sisters have become renewed and enjoyed the study of “Theology of the Body”. Thanks for reading this and I hope you find true happiness and satisfaction for the hunger that is in all of us. Bob
Comment by Bob — February 8, 2009 @ 1:07 pm
Bob, for once I’m not writing about sex or philosophy, I’m writing about civil law and how it is to be applied fairly. Or how civil law is applied unfairly by denying it to one group of people because another group of people, like the donors on the list above, don’t think they should have it for whatever collection of reasons.
If you want to make marriage cosmic, fine with me. But as long as it’s called civil marriage, instead of civil partnership or civil domestic contract or something bland and un-cosmic like that, then let’s do the right thing and make the rights and privileges straight couples legally enjoy (for the price of a license) legal for gay couples (also for the price of the license).
I have posted a list of names of people who support an unfair world with their money because, well, they’ve got theirs and everyone else can go to hell.
And, Bob, vive la difference, but there’s more to life and love than anatomy.

This is very exciting! I’ve always found many of the forgotten figures of the 19th century to be fascinating – especially women writers. This book is a great idea… but why such a garish cover?!
Comment by Rob V — March 22, 2009 @ 3:12 pm
Oh, Rob!
Garish? Not even lurid, mind-blowing or seizure-inducing?
We were going for Exciting! Enticing! Buy me before I leap off the shelf into your arms! For God’s sake, Anna Cora Mowatt is in here!
Seriously, I made the author do the cover so I am absolved of all responsibility for it. I like this cover, I think it’s cool, eye-catching, and the very idea of Victorian American design. It’s the kind of pattern Anna Cora might have had a couch or footstool upholstered in. Or something. I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t wear it.
However, if you’d really like a cover with a lower volume, I’ll do a special order for you, but it won’t be $8.40 or free shipping.
Ribbing aside, thanks for leaving a comment, Rob. I’m glad to be able publish a well-written, well-researched book on someone who is largely forgotten and shouldn’t be, cover notwithstanding. At least people will notice the book from across the room.

I think you’re overreacting. Publishers have the right to refuse service to anyone for whatever reason. If a company chooses to print something that could be deemed erotic/pornographic or whatever, and they force their employees to work on it, the company is putting themselves in a position to be sued for sexual harassment by their employees.
Docucopies made the right choice here. This is America. Find someone else to print your material, and don’t go publishing libelous and slanderous things when you get refused.

In Japan, if someone gave me a ride, and I ended up in the back seat, I’d always start digging around for the seatbelt. (You know, force of habit, click-it-or-ticket campaigns, the usual.) This either elicited a) ‘crazy gaijin’-type embarrassment laughter; or b) in the case of my homestay family – nani wo shimasu ka? I mentioned that in America, it’s the law for everyone in the car to buckle up, or the driver could get arrested. (I didn’t know how to say “get a traffic ticket” at the time”). Fortunately for me, my host family’s daughter was a member of the prefectural police force, where she met her husband, who is working his way up the PD ranks microsoft test.
If I travel out of the major cities, among the little kids screeching “henna gaijin”, people would ask me why I was there, and was I with a group. The unspoken questions seemed to be “Why would some crazy gaijin go all the way out here (inaka)? Everyone knows there aren’t any interesting things to see or do outside the big cities. And it’s even worse if you’re not in a large group!”
